“As an adolescent, I first encountered the genius works of Romare Bearden by way of the celebrated 1980’s sitcom, The Cosby Show. I recall being enthralled by the warm, color-laden majestic figures and how I nearly broke my father’s brand new Zenith VCR to record, pause and study the adored paintings. Bearden was the first black artist I was exposed to and aside from wanting to emulate the character Denise Huxtable’s inimitable fashion sense, I was determined to ardent study and was excited that I too, would one-day paint in similar technique and style.” -Ya La’ford

“Bearden spoke to what’s possible in spite of what’s torn or fractured. To me, everything humane is in Bearden—history and saxophones, worship and sex, city and garden, ideas and dinner, art and baths, rites and riffs. I’m a devotee.” -Ariel

“Romare Bearden’s ability to merge the study of Western composition with his rich life experiences (ancestral memories, jazz music, urban culture) continues to inspire my own artistic vision. This collage is an homage to the master.” -Robin Brooks
